Research by CBD brand Cycling Frog has revealed every state’s favorite stoner film.
Stoner movie is a subgenre of comedy film that revolves around the recreational use of cannabis. Generally, cannabis use is one of the main themes and inspires much of the plot. It can also include movies that are essential to the marijuana experience more generally, ranging from counterculture classics, top-shelf mainstream films and cult comedies.
It may not be everyone’s favorite film category, but there’s no denying that the stoner movie genre boasts some classics that cannabis connoisseurs and film fans love to rewatch.
By examining some of the most popular and well-loved stoner movies combined with Google Trends data from the last 5 years, Cycling Frog has revealed the 50 states’ favorite stoner films.

Across the board, The Big Lebowski (1998) was featured most often, with 17 states searching for this film more than any other in the list. This comes as no surprise as ‘black comedy crime film’ The Big Lebowski has slowly climbed the ranks to achieve cult classic status, and has even inspired an annual festival that is aptly called Lebowski Fest.
Close second is 2012’s Ted, which is the fan favorite for 13 states across the country. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, Ted was the 5th highest-grossing R-rated comedy film of 2012, and was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Dazed and Confused (1993) came up trumps for another 7 states, and We’re the Millers (2013) also deserves a mention, being the fan favorite in 5 states including Arkansas, Idaho, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and South Dakota.
Other states’ favorite stoner films include This is the End (2013) featuring everybody’s favorite Hollywood stoners Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Jonah Hill, Friday (1995) written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, and slasher parody Scary Movie (2000).
